What we actually install
A microinverter converts DC to AC at the panel. Each module runs on its own. Solar Topper uses NEP BDM-600 units and includes the monitoring app. You see daily production, per-panel output, and an alert if one inverter drops—not a single number for the whole roof.
When this is the right call
- Partial shade from trees, chimneys, or a two-story next door
- East/west or split planes that would otherwise be one weak string
- You may add panels later for an EV or a heat pump
- You want to know which panel failed instead of guessing
Simple unshaded south planes can still use a string design. We pick the architecture from the roof, not a brand slogan.
How this differs from adding or replacing panels
Microinverters are the electronics on a new or expanded array. Expansion is more modules on a working system. Upgrades replace old or failed modules. We will not quote all three as the same line item.
Do microinverters help with tree shade in Orange County?
Yes. One shaded panel does not drag the whole string down. That matters on established tracts with eucalyptus, jacaranda, and two-story neighbors. We still model shade honestly—microinverters are not a license to ignore a tree.
Can I add panels later if I start with microinverters?
Usually yes, panel by panel, if roof space and the service can take it. That is why microinverters pair with solar system expansion. String inverters often hit a hard AC/DC limit first.
Is there a string inverter in the garage?
Not on a NEP microinverter job. Conversion happens at the module. Monitoring is in the NEP app—production by panel, not a single garage box.
Do you install Enphase?
We install NEP BDM-600 microinverters. If you already have another brand on the roof, say so on the quote and we will tell you whether we service it, expand it, or start clean.
